The KWB story
It all began with an idea ...
Discover the story of KWB, from the birth of a vision and the first steps to international expansion and our plans for the future.
The original vision behind KWB was to transform the way heat and electricity are used in the home. Seven idealists and visionaries – August Raggam, Erwin Stubenschrott, Fridegunde Raggam, Eberhard Lautenschläger, Christoph Loidl, Annemarie Kees and Franz Frank – wanted to change the future of energy.
Their goals were clear. One of the founding figures, Professor August Raggam, summed up the principle behind their work: “Only a complete transition from fossil and nuclear energy to 100% renewable energy can secure the future of our planet and therefore of our children.”
In spring 1994, after 14 years of experimentation, development and construction, KWB – Kraft und Wärme aus Biomasse GmbH was founded in Graz.
In 1997, the company expanded and moved to St. Margarethen an der Raab, around 30 kilometres from Graz.
During the 2000s, KWB opened its first international subsidiary in Mertingen, Germany, followed by subsidiaries in Italy, Slovenia and France. The company also built what was then Europe’s first and largest privately operated innovation centre for biomass heating at its headquarters.
Combining renewable heating with a high level of comfort led to strong growth. Many KWB inventions and patents date from this period, including the seven-chamber cellular wheel sluice for maximum safety, fully automatic heat exchanger and burner plate cleaning, the optimised combustion process using cleanEfficiency 2.0 technology, the robust KWB crawler burner and the KWB modular and easily transportable system.
PDP Holding GmbH, owned by Peter Daniell Porsche, became the majority shareholder of KWB in September 2016. In 2021, construction began on a fifth production hall, doubling production capacity. The expansion was completed in 2022 with the construction of a new logistics building.
As KWB evolved from a boiler manufacturer into a provider of integrated energy solutions, the company was renamed KWB Energiesysteme GmbH in 2022.
With Clee, KWB launched its own energy management system, setting the direction for the future. Within a KWB energy system, energy is controlled intelligently and used where it is needed most.
KWB is driving the energy transition
With expanded production capacity, increased investment in research and development and the intelligent Clee energy management system, KWB is actively driving the energy transition. An extended portfolio of photovoltaic systems, inverters and storage solutions means KWB now provides everything needed to achieve greater energy independence at home.
